Composer Shortlisting Advisory Panel

Spring 2024 Cohort

In line with Sound and Music’s Fair Access Principles, we want to have an open and transparent selection process with a diverse panel reflecting the essence of Music Patron’s vision – to connect composers with music lovers. 

The external panellists are Andrew Burke, Sheila Hayman, Stuart Maconie, Stuart MacRae, Atem Mbeboh, Supriya Nagaragan and Jackie Newbould. Joining them within from Sound and Music are representatives from its Digital Communications, Education and Fundraising teams.

Andrew Burke

Andrew Burke is the Chief Executive & Artistic Director of the London Sinfonietta.

He is responsible for the overall running of the organisation, curating its artistic seasons, commissioning an expanding range of work and developing partnerships. He has also led on the development of innovative digital projects for the ensemble.

Sheila Hayman

Sheila Hayman is a BAFTA and BAFTA-Fulbright-winning filmmaker and former Young Journalist of the Year. Her films and digital projects about music in different genres have included 'The Rewrite of Spring' (LSO/Barbican Centre), 'Bach and Forth', an AR 'hunt the music' game (MIT Media Lab/OAE), the interactive performance 'Page to Stage' (Creative Sandbox/OAE)and 100 Million Musicians', a BBC film about Western classical music in China.

She's also made two films about her ancestors, ‘Mendelssohn, The Nazis and Me’ nominated for the Grierson Arts Documentary of the Year, and ‘Fanny: The Other Mendelssohn', currently in cinemas and on Curzon Home.

Stuart Maconie

Stuart Maconie is a writer and broadcaster specialising in pop culture, music and social history.

One of his shows, Freak Zone on BBC 6Music, features all manner of adventurous and experimental music, from jazz to electronica, avant rock to modern classical.

Composer Stuart MacRae

Stuart MacRae

Scottish composer Stuart MacRae’s work explores themes of humanity in/as nature, the use of language through the singing voice, and mythology.

His music brings emotion to the fore, and spans a wide variety of genres, including opera, instrumental, vocal and electroacoustic music.

Atem Mbeboh

With over 15 years in the business arena, Atem has worked alongside senior executives from several prominent companies, contributing to effective campaigns. His foundation lies in a diverse range of sales and marketing methodologies, from value and solution selling to both Transactional and Relationship Marketing.

At present, he heads Rant + Rave, a data-driven inclusive marketing agency. With a clear mission in mind, the agency helps organisations foster genuine connections with their audience. Their approach is straightforward yet impactful, emphasising research, compelling storytelling, creative content, and apt communication channels.

Supriya Nagarajan

Supriya Nagarajan is a UK based vocalist/composer who creates cross- cultural/genre, concept driven immersive music work. She has toured the globe and created work for international festivals like the hcmf//, Ultima Oslo and Iceland Symphony Orchestra. Within the UK Supriya has composed and performed for national venues including the Royal Albert Hall, Southbank Centre and Sage Gateshead.

Supriya is a Performing Rights Society/Jerwood composer and an alumni of New Voices 2018, and she is the Artistic Director of Yorkshire-based arts charity Manasamitra, and she is a passionate advocate for fair access in the music sector.

Jackie Newbould

Jackie Newbould is a Creative Producer with extensive experience in performing arts management and production, particularly in contemporary music, including artist development, company and financial management, commissioning, production & performance, nurturing partnerships including cross-art forms collaborations.

Following 30 years as Executive Producer for the award-winning Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, current projects include building partnerships and producing creative work with a wide range of artists, including Montreal-based Bozzini Quartet (consultant), Hofesh Shechter Company (producer), Riot Ensemble and New European Ensemble (creative producer), a number of composers and performers, NMC Recordings (Chair), and as a Trustee of Explore Ensemble and Wild Plum Arts.
