Jo Quail
Music Patron allows me to create a community within which to explore and discuss my music, and enables me to bring this sometimes solitary journey of composition and creation to people interested in the evolution and development of new classical music.Jo Quail is an internationally acclaimed award-winning composer and virtuoso cellist from London. Equally at home on stage solo, with bands, or in collaboration with choir and orchestra, she combines an eloquent mastery of her instrument with innovative looping techniques, to realise her complex, evocative music for audiences worldwide. Primarily a contemporary classical / avant-garde artist, Jo’s music appeals to a far broader crowd: “Jo breathes new life in to the cello, for the first time making classical music’s long-standing influence on metal a two-way street” - Metal Hammer magazine What does being one of Jo's patrons look like? Jo’s patrons will join her international, no-musical-boundaries community, in a unique, behind the scenes way. They will be invited to join every step of her composition process, from first DNA of a musical idea through to the performance or recording, via the rehearsal room and backstage.
With you, and Music Patron, I can create in real time a detailed and vibrant picture of each work I am creating, that over time becomes a map of where we have been and where we might head to next.Supporting a composer on Music Patron gives you a first-hand perspective on the many elements within the creative process and an understanding of an authentic journey of a composer. You can find out more about what it’s like to be a patron here Biography Inspired by the visual arts as much as by fellow composers, Jo cites Barbara Hepworth and Georgia O’Keefe as key influences, alongside the diverse music of Debussy, Pärt, Mick Gordon, and Cardiacs among many others. As a result, she freely crosses the boundaries between genres, awakening listener emotions, and taking audiences into uncharted territory with each concert. Her exuberant, celebratory performance style has won her a fanbase in the contemporary classical world as well as among enthusiasts of post-rock, metal and electronica. As a soloist Jo has performed extensively through Europe and internationally; venues and festivals include Hellfest (FR), the Melbourne Recital Centre (AUS) and the Royal Festival Hall (UK). Since 2011, Jo has released five albums, three EPs and a live DVD on her own label AdderStone Records. In 2022 Jo released The Cartographer (By Norse), a composition commissioned by Roadburn Festival with a brief to "redefine heaviness". Jo’s latest composition Invocation/Supplication - two ‘three-song-cycles’ for vocalists Maria Franz (Heilung) and Lorenzo Esposito Fornasari (O.R.k), will have orchestrated live performances this year.
