SUMMARY:Red Note Ensemble and Laura Bowler: Deconstructing Pierrot
DESCRIPTION:Red Note Ensemble and Laura Bowler (voice) \nComposed by Laura Bowler\nCo-commissioned by Red Note Ensemble\, Music on Main\, and Ensemble Offspring \nA musical demolition and a dramaturgical interrogation\, Laura Bowler’s Deconstructing Pierrot takes Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire and looks at the work through a contemporary queer lens. A new interpretation of Albert Giraud’s poems that repurposes musical material from Schoenberg’s work in a subversive act of defiance of the great master. It interrogates Schoenberg’s vocal writing for the female voice\, and its evocation of mental instability. The genderless Pierrot representation of the alienated artist is brought into the present\, accompanied by the many ills and preoccupations of the modern day artist; social media\, identity\, consumerism\, loneliness\, clicks\, environmentalism.

SUMMARY:Colin Riley: Water over Stone
DESCRIPTION:The Almanac returns this winter. A musical stirring that combines instrumental music with poetry\, song\, found texts\, improvisations and a certain trademark creative curiosity. This performance sees some of Cumbria’s finest chamber musicians come together to continue to forge a musical tradition. It has a thread… Summer Notes become Winter Notes\, a turning of the year\, an Almanac for Cumbria\, a book of days. \nCome and take a seat at the fireside of this ensemble\, with their voices\, clarinet\, bass clarinet\, harmonium\, piano and percussion. Expect the slightly unexpected as they weave musical creatures from the air and earth\, sing of rivers\, moons\, and local legends. A new set of carols to accompany the old – carrying homelessness and ambition\, songs of love and of time\, the crack and spin of winter leaves and rain\, dry-stone-walls of poems\, words of grief and hope\, lullabies\, and tunes – well known and brand new – but mostly an invitation to be taken on a journey. We hope you enjoy it. \nJack McNeill / clarinet and bass clarinet \nEleanor McIntosh / soprano \nKate Halsall / Harmonium & Percussion \n  \n  \n  \nA MUSICAL ALMANAC: WINTER NOTES
