🔒 A New Camera Setup for My 60th Birthday.

I will be updating with more directly music-related posts very soon, but in the meantime, there’s this!

Introducing my new camera, an exciting tool to use for high-quality photographic capture, documentation, taking raw images for processing as digital artwork, art NFTs, videos and sound recording at concerts. A big, flexible step up from my mobile phone camera. A wonderful gift from my eldest son and the family for my 60th birthday.

Ordering the tracks…

Ordering pieces for a new CD with Lotte Betts-Dean / Sequoia / Delphian records.

Today I’ve started working on the order in which these pieces will be presented on the new CD. It’s a pretty complicated task, a bit like 3D chess (no, I haven’t ever actually played 3-dimensional chess) but I think I’m getting somewhere with the help of some mind-mapping and strategic colour-coding. 🔒 Replugging in my creativity

Returning to London having conducted and arranged a baroque opera left me quite out of touch with the boundary-free side of my imagination and my general whimsy! This update talks through my journey through some exhaustion, some creative-tightness and some grief to writing a piece that seemed the right thing for the right time.

🔒 In Memoriam: Gordon Crosse 1937-2021 A private view

Hello Patrons,

I’m trying something a little new in this update. I’m releasing a patron-only preview, a little like a private view at a painting exhibition, a few weeks before I make the video available to the general public via YouTube and my social media channels.

This piece of music exists only in its video format so the visual images and sounds go together to make a complete artwork.

What Connects my Music and Paintings? An introduction.

In this latest update and following requests from a number of people, I’m taking time out from painting and composing to talk to you about how I believe my music compositions and paintings are connected, what the limits of that connection are, and how that connection is or is not transmitted to the viewer and listener and how we build meaning around what we experience. If you have any questions, comments or requests, please leave a comment and I will reply by video. Thank you for watching.

The Right to Write: Composition and Ageism

When you’re told you are too old for music commissioners and promoters to take any notice of you, you realise something is very ageist about the music industry. In this video, I talk about a recent conversation I had with a potential music manager and his experience of trying to promote older composers against the tide of interest in the young. If there were ever an example of the importance of Music Patron for the musical life of older composers and the country in general, this is it!

🔒 Setting Emily Brontë’s ‘The Prisoner’

Over the past year or so I’ve been working with the Australian mezzo-soprano Lotte Betts-Dean on several new pieces for voice. The plan is to build up a repertoire for a full CD of works for voice, which will be released on Delphian Records next year…we started by exploring a piece I’d already written, The lif of this world (here performed by Michael Chance),and Lotte’s instinctive approach to the ornamentation (the little notes in between the main notes) I’d written in the score inspired me to explore this part of my writing further. So I began work on a new piece for solo voice, based on Emily Brontë’s poem The Prisoner (A fragment), which would employ a variety of approaches to ornamentation, many of them based loosely on a folk-like idiom…
